Aug. 20, 1926 — Jan. 17, 2014

Marilyn “Marnie” Conrad, 87, died Jan. 17, 2014, in Fresno, Calif.

Marnie was born in Longview, Wash., to Clifford E. Hadley and Eva L. Hadley. She was raised in Longview, and was the little sister to big brothers Wayne and Herb. She graduated from R.A. Long High School, where she was student body president, and received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Washington State College.

She married Clell L. Conrad on Dec. 26, 1948. She and Clell lived in Eugene and Elmira, and in 1952 finally settled in Corvallis, where they raised their three sons, Gary Clifford, Stuart William and Kent Hadley. Marnie was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Marnie was a member of First Presbyterian Church, and served as an elder and a deacon. She was granted lifetime membership in the Presbyterian Women for her service to the church. Among her many volunteer activities, she served in Family Assistance at Good Samaritan Hospital for more than 20 years. She belonged to chapter CL of P.E.O.

Music was a prominent part of Marnie’s life. She played the piano and taught piano lessons. For 20 years she sang in the Town Choir, which, for many of those years, rehearsed in her home once a week. She served in various capacities with the Corvallis-OSU Music Association and the OSU Symphony Society.

After raising her family, Marnie worked at the Oregon State University Bookstore and the OSU Financial Aid Office. Marnie and Clell thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings in Corvallis and at their Black Butte Ranch vacation home.

In 2003, Marnie moved to Willamette View Retirement Community in Portland. Last year she moved to Fresno.

Marnie will especially be remembered for her devotion to family and friends. She welcomed extended family, international friends and anyone needing a friendly smile for holidays and extended stays. Her grace and kindness will be her legacy.

Survivors include her sons, Gary (Mary) Conrad of Bend, Stuart (Marilyn) Conrad of Fresno, and Kent Conrad of Hayward, Calif.; grandchildren, Erica Austin, Lyndi Lieresmann, Cal Conrad, Abigail Bates, Christina Davis and Kevin Conrad; and great-grandchild, Nathaniel.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at First Presbyterian Church in Corvallis.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Knight Cancer Challenge at Oregon Health & Science University, firstgiving.com/fundraiser/marilynconrad.
