David M. Cuniff III of Corvallis died of heart failure Monday in Philomath. He was 56.

He was born in Corvallis to David and Alice Moen Cuniff. He attended Fairplay Elementary and Highland View Junior High and graduated from Corvallis High School in 1965. He received a bachelor's degree in political science from Oregon State University.

He married Geary Larson of Philomath on Sept. 11, 1971. While working on a second bachelor's degree in history, which he received in 1974, he formed Shadowfax Janitorial Service with his lifelong friends, Craig White and Geoff Heatherington. Upon graduating from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, Calif., in 1977, he and his wife returned to Corvallis, where he practiced law until moving his office to Philomath in 1996.

His family described him as a "voracious" reader and said that he enjoyed a good argument. He loved animals and took in many cats, dogs and horses over the years. Traveling back roads by car was a favorite pastime.

Survivors include his wife, Geary "George"; sons, Aaron and Jesse of Corvallis; daughters, Meghann of Eugene and Katie of Corvallis; brother, Cliff of Annapolis, Md.; sister-in-law, Bev Larson of Corvallis; mother-in-law, Thelma "Skinny" Larson of Philomath; two nephews and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will greet friends at a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 30, at McHenry Funeral Home. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at the Hanson Country Inn.

Memorial donations can be made to Old Mill Center for Children and Families or Heartland Humane Society in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N.W. Fifth St., Corvallis, OR 97330.
